Chapter 7: Get a Real Job
Anna here, Nathan’s wife. Nathan thought he’d get me to write this week’s post since he tends to be the dreamer in our relationship and I’m often the risk-averse, practical gal in our discussions (it’s all about balance, kids).
I have no desire to start a business like my husband does, but I do know what it’s like to have dreams (despite my mindset being largely practical most of the time). I always wanted to be an actress (being a theatre kid will do that to you). However, due to being someone that prioritizes safety and stability, along with realizing that I had a passion to help people who are vulnerable, I became a nurse instead.
I think I made a good decision, and here’s a few reasons why:
having a stable source of income actually frees you to pursue your dreams without the toll of worrying about money and making a living
If you are trying to pursue a dream but don’t have a steady job/source of income, SO much weight rests on your dream working out, and that sucks
If you aren’t already making money, you can’t be as free to invest in your dream (startup costs add up quick babe!), and if you don’t invest/put money into your dream it might not actually take off
In my case, I love that I can have a steady job that will always be there, while also having room to pursue the arts on the side (and personally, I think I’d enjoy the arts less if they were my sole source of income, but to each their own).
My husband has a steady software developing job that he loves, but he says he only got his degree in computer science because he wanted to be able to put food on the table for his family someday (yay husband!). I love that we both have stability in our careers, but I also love that we can pursue our dreams.
